Terre Haute’s Largest Juneteenth Celebration: June 15, 2024 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Juneteenth honors the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. The name “Juneteenth” is

a blend of two words: “June” and “nineteenth.” It's believed to be the oldest African-American holiday, with annual

celebrations on June 19th in different parts of the country dating back to 1866.

Terre Haute Day: A Juneteenth Celebration

Terre Haute Day began in 2020 as a way to honor Juneteenth in Terre Haute. The inaugural event brought 300 guests and maxed out our location, provided by Delisa Salvage on Liberty Ave. Through community partnerships the event grew to include a business expo to highlight black entrepreneurs and a 3 on 3 basketball tournament, in 2021 we welcomed over 1,000 guests and hit 5,000 guests in 2023! We have been able to grow by partnering with Chances and Services for Youth at the Booker T. Washington Center, a location that is rich with black history. Though Terre Haute Day honors Juneteenth we use the celebratory weekend to welcome friends and family to come home to the 812. To share stories of the black excellence in Terre Haute-from pro athletes to philanthropists to entrepreneurs to activists, we are proud to highlight the historic and future leadership in the black community right here from the 812. It is our hope that by having events like Terre Haute Day that we will continue to build on a strong legacy of black culture that will inspire our youth to continue to break records, innovate beyond imagination and never forget it was The Haute that raised them.

Thank you to our location partner, Chances and Services for Youth. It is because of their partnership that we are able to grow and add to the Juneteenth celebration.
